As we juggle writing time, home and social life and book events, it is not just our personal commitment that requires organization but deciding on how effective we can make each aspect. With social media we can blast our books onto the internet but a single post soon disappears into the abyss. Book signings, author readings and book fairs are usually a more effective mode of advertising ourselves and our books. A chance to converse with our readers gives them a real insight into the backstory of the narrative and a sense of the author too. A website is a great way to keep readers informed on upcoming events and publication dates but also gives us an opportunity to reveal how we write, why we write and how the story was created. Character interviews, excerpts and sneak peeks of current projects tempt our readership.
All these options are positive venues for advertising but we also have the opportunity to use selected publications too. I recently decided to spend a nominal fee on an advert in a children’s magazine. It is issued monthly and has a great readership. With download or print options available my advert has the potential to be seen repeatedly and this was a good part of my decision to pay for the advert.I will certainly be repeating this exercise later in the year.

The event Words in the Park in Sherwood Park, AB (http://words.sclibrary.ab.ca/) is celebrating it’s seventh year. As the secretary of the co-host, The Writers Foundation of Strathcona County and a local author, this event is the highlight of my year.

There is a lot of pre-planning for any event of course and as the event date grows closer there are lots of things requiring attention. I spent several hours on Tuesday evening with other WFSC members, putting out numerous signs for the event around the local area. Then last night it was my friend, Linda and I, busily putting labels on 100+ water bottles and packing up several boxes of books for all her authors (45 books in all) ready for display on Saturday 25th October – 12.00 – 4pm.
All the organizers, including me, will be setting up the tables and displays early on Saturday morning. I practiced my table display several weeks ago and have all my supplies packed and ready to go. Yes, I’m that organized! This is my practice run photo:
On the left is my adult fantasy, The Rython Kingdom with bookmarks and glowing globe. In the middle is my soft toy, Rumble with his book, Rumble’s First Scare and T-shirts and hats (I have printed out coloring pages too). On the right is Ockleberries to the Rescue with wooden door ornament and forest animal figurines (2 glow!) Hopefully it will attract attention.
I also have a reading on the day at 1 pm so will relate a chapter of my forest sprite adventures in Ockleberries to the Rescue.
When you have an event, how do you plan your display?
Well I’m back to the grindstone but feeling relaxed and regenerated after a wonderful long weekend. The drive to Saskatoon took five hours and my companion, Linda, kindly drove all the way (although I did volunteer). For those of you who do not know, I live on the Albertan prairies, which, as the name suggests, are flat. As an expat, I sorely miss the rolling hillsides of England. So you can image my delight in seeing undulations in the landscape as we travelled toward Saskatchewan. Of course nothing matches the English countryside but it was a real treat to see hills.
This was a very informative day where we networked and gained some valuable insights. Linda and I have come up with a game plan for her publishing company, Dream Write Publishing, advertising campaign. So we are both pumped. Not to end the day too quickly we happened upon a great Italian restaurant so had to partake of the fine pasta with a glass of good red, of course.
Sunday was The Word on the Street event and we drove downtown to set up beside the library. Rows of white canopies with dark blue covered tables welcomed us. It didn’t take long to have all the books displayed and I had one corner for Rumble to sit ‘guarding’ his books. I loved to see the reaction of children and adults alike when they noticed my little monster. With lots of cuddles and pats on the head and a candy for a treat, I found everyone intrigued at the Rumble coloring competition.
The weather was kind with lots of sunshine and with Linda and Tammy, whose book was launched we had a great day conversing with some very interesting people. At day’s end we were tired after packing up the boxes of books so indulged in a quick fast food meal in the hotel. Having plenty of time to check out we slept late before our trip home. I managed to sew a couple of Rumble hand puppets on the road, which got a few looks from other travellers but it did help the five-hour drive pass quicker.
