Words in the Park 2016 – An Author Event…

Once again I attended this fantastic event. Part of Alberta Culture days, organized by my writing group, Writers Foundation of Strathcona County and with co-hosts, Arts and Culture Council of Strathcona County. With over thirty authors and a dozen artisans filling the venue as well as an aboriginal fancy dancer, hoop workshop, memoir presentation, African drumming tutorial, live music, children’s activities and author readings, the event offered fun activities for all the family.

I planned my table to display my children’s books at the front with Rumble’s First Scare and soft toy Rumble of course, with hats, T-shirts, bookmarks and pins. Ockleberries to the Rescue had the animal ornaments and the ‘door’ display. Then there was Clickety Click – the day of the launch! I made the exploding planet to attract readers and had special scaly toques made in two shades of purple. The purple table covering also focused the eye as did my purple inspired outfit. To the side I displayed The Rython Kingdom, my fantasy romance, as it is an adult book, with its glowing orb and handmade bookmarks.

This year I created an activity table, which you can see behind me in the photo, with ‘monster’ and Rumble pictures and also animal quizzes. A couple of kids won prizes for their entries, unfortunately I only got a photo of one! She loved her monster slippers.

It was a successful day and I sold many books and a few toques too. See this lad with his Rumble toque.

I find the themed displays and merchandise attracts the children’s attention and then I have a chance to explain the books to the children and their parents. I was fortunate to have one Clickety Click book bought by our Mayor who will donate it to a local school.

Another lady purchased two copies of Ockleberries solely on the review she had read in our local paper. She even cut it out and brought it with her.

I enjoyed participating in the author readings and shared part of Ockleberries to the Rescue – Stump the Woodpecker to be exact.

To be part of such an event, sharing my words with readers and forging new friendships with other authors further confirms my love for the written word and this select membership that is ‘writer’.

How do you attract people to your author table?

A Gregarious Nature Comes in Handy…

October 1, 2013

Gregarious – definition: seeking and enjoying the company of others ; sociable

Culture brush

My weekend was spent in the company of a few members of my writing group at Culture Days in Sherwood Park. This event is in conjunction with Alberta Culture Days- http://culture.alberta.ca/culturedays/. All types of artisan’s attend to show visitors their craft and sell their unique wares. Everyone has to have a gregarious nature to make these events successful.

Sadly, arts and culture seems to be low on the list when it comes to the general public. We are constantly trying to find new ways to entice visitors to these events. Do we blame technology for the lack of interest in crafts and hobbies that require hands on participation?

Have you attended similar events? What was your experience like? Do you have any tips on how to garner public interest?

We have found if there is free food at any event it is successful…do we make batches of cookies to hand out every time? Is that really practical?

WFSC Culture

Culture Days Sept 2013 (2)My group, The Writers Foundation of Strathcona County, hosted an interactive writing workshop with the theme write your story. With pads of paper, pens and our Writing Prompt Journey book   http://www.dreamwritepublishing.ca/retail/books/writing-prompt-journey-road-your-creativity and Your Life Time of Stories http://www.dreamwritepublishing.ca/retail/books/your-lifetime-stories workbook on hand to help the process we encouraged visitors to participate.

Dream Write Culture

The other table I was present at (yes, I multitask!)  was Dream Write Publishing, where I handed out coloring sheets for my Rumble competition. I received a few enthusiastic  entries there and then. Rumble sat at the end of the table for friendly cuddles.

With a vast display of books ranging from children’s books to poetry, there was something for everyone. If you could not visit feel free to visit the web site and order from there.

Melting we were but it was worth it…

Deliquesce – definition: 1) to melt away or to disappear as if by melting 2) (chemistry) to dissolve gradually and become liquid by attracting and absorbing moisture from the air, as certain salts, acids, and alkalies.

Strathconaph-FAC-artintheplaza-2013Not sure about chemistry but my fellow Writers Foundation members, Dream Write Publishing staff and I were melting yesterday at the Arts in the Plaza and Strathcona Celebrates. It was a pageantry filled day (my English is showing!) Tanks and military vehicles paraded through the streets and then the horse guards, which were my favorite. Bright red uniforms and gold helmets with tassels flowing.

Luckily we had canopies to shade us and displays of the Writers Foundation history were very popular. I managed to hand out quite a few Rumble coloring competition pages so hopefully there will be lots of entries to judge.
