Karen McGill

What inspired you to write this book?

I have had multiple sclerosis since June of 2000. It took me thirteen years, but I got rid of my cane in 2013 and I thought it was time for people to hear my story. Maybe I’ll be able to help someone.

How did you come up with the title?

On the Right Side

I believe that as long as you aren’t six feet under, you are on the right side and anything is possible. The title is On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success.

Is this your first book? How many books have you written (published or unpublished)?

This was my fourth published book, I have five books available. The other four are fiction.

Missing flowersmystique risingThe BondA Little Poison

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

People are stronger than we think and we can conquer most anything. We are not victims.

How much of the book is realistic?

The entire book!

Are your characters based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Since this is nonfiction, the whole thing is based on my life.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I don’t think I would change anything in it.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

On The Right Side is an inspiring story

What is your favorite part/chapter of your book/project?

That would have to be the poem at the end. There is a special story to it but you have to read the book to find out! LOL

What is your favorite theme/genre to write?

I enjoy writing paranormal, exploring the unexplainable.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t write on. If I get inspired, I will write on the topic.

What book are you reading now?

The Charisma Myth by Olivia Fox Cabane and Set Your Voice Free by Roger Love.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Unfortunately, for the last few months, I have been buried in technical books and working on speeches. I haven’t had the time to explore any fiction or new writers.

Do you see writing as a career?

Most definitely!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself as a highly successful motivational speaker with both nonfiction and fiction books available and selling well.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Getting started! I have tons of ideas but getting them on paper is sometimes difficult.

Have you ever hated something you wrote?

No, I have abandoned many projects, but I have never hated anything. They are all a part of me and to hate them would be to hate myself.

What book do you wish you had written?

I can’t think of any. Not to say that I don’t admire other works because I do but they are part of that writer, not me.

What is your best marketing tip?

Keep an open mind. What works for someone may not work for you and often the thing that worked for you in the past may not work again. And don’t give up.

What genre is your next project? What is it about?

Presently, I am working on speaking career and investigating other markets for On The Right Side.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

I am not working on one at the moment though I am playing with ideas for the third in the Julie/Santoro (Missing Flowers, A Little Poison) series.

Thankful and excited all rolled into one…

This past weekend is amongst the best I have ever had. Why you may ask, well in short two great writing events came to fruition for me. I was beside myself with excitement and smiling like the preverbal Cheshire Cat.

Literally bursting with happiness and wanting to share with everyone not just because I was proud of myself but also to show that determination, hard work and commitment bring their own rewards. If you follow your dream it will become reality, maybe in small steps but that is the joy of our journey.

My first event was submitting my fantasy – The Rython Kingdom – onto Smashwords. It was a nerve racking experience, letting go of a manuscript I had worked on for over a year through revision after revision and numerous edits…but the immediacy of its availability to the global community was the part that took my breath away. We are used to everything being instantly accessible – just not our precious words – there was no time to adjust to them being out in the world for all to see. http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/214247
Why not take a look? The next event was quite a surprise. I had been asked to write an article for a new online newspaper, so submitted one, not really expecting it to be accepted. Almost as soon as I had sent my email, I got one back asking for my bio & a headshot! I frantically read through my bio’s and then took a few new photos to send off. As many of you know I am passionate about my writing but also my writing group and that is the subject of my article. http://strathconaconnect.ca/strathcona-county-gets-writing-p219-90.htm
I encourage you all to follow your dream and take advantage of any and all opportunities that come your way.
