Into the Abyss…Does Social Media Work..?

We all struggle to promote our work and turn to the numerous social media sites as avenues of interaction. We can spend hours posting book links, reviews, book cover art, links to our blog etc. When it comes to determining the success of all this activity, we can feel despondent. A tweet is lost in a multitude of other tweets within seconds, a face book page post may last slightly longer but its place is taken once the feed renews. Now you may feel such random and spasmodic promotion does little to help you become known but take heart in the fact that these efforts are not in vain. Re-tweets and shares are confirmation that someone has seen your post and it spreads to other media sites in the process.

There are analytic pages for most media sites, where you are able to track the success of a particular promotion. You can focus on specific groups or locations as well, giving your promotion an advantage and ensuring the ‘right’ people view the information you supply. I utilize all the usual social media sites but have to confess I am not an everyday user so ‘miss’ whole days or even weeks of potential promotional opportunities.

co-promote

That is why I was so thrilled to find a site called Co-Promote last year. At the time most of the users were involved in the music business. Once I read how the site worked I was intrigued but thought there was no room for authors. I wrote an email asking if they would be expanding their reach to other enterprises. The reply was quick and favorable. Anyone was welcome to join no matter what their trade, business or creative genre. I was informed new options would be added for books, magazines and blogs. Encouraged by this willingness to accommodate, I joined up and have found this site to be excellent. You can join for free or register for a sliding scale of options.  More here: https://copromote.com/about.php  The added bonus is that whenever there is a share you are sent an email advising you of who has shared. Each email also shows you new shares, new engagements and the reach of your promotion has achieved. Each promotion can be run for a few days or a few weeks, whichever is preferable to your requirements. My current promotion began on 12th October – so far it has reached 27.5K  people! I could not have done that with any other site in such a short time.

Gratifying Reviews to Help Your Favorite Author…

November 15, 2013
mandyevebarnett

Gratification – definition: 1. the state of being gratified, pleased, or greatly satisfied; 2. a reward, recompense, or gratuity

Rumble's First Scare

And in response to the complete opposite of yesterday’s word – I was thrilled to receive this review of Rumble’s First Scare, as you can see from my link here: https://mandyevebarnett.com/2012/03/24/book-review-of-distinction-4/

Recently there have been several face book posts asking people to support their local or favorite author(s) by giving them a review. This enables other potential purchasers to get a real review of your work prior to purchasing it. However, I do not condone spiteful reviews. They show the reviewers nasty side and reflect on them more than the author or novel in question. As the old saying goes ‘if you can’t say anything nice, don;t say anything at all’. If the critique is given respectfully and is constructive then that is another matter.

What methods do you think help support authors?

I was intrigued with this bloggers list for supporters to help on a budget. http://kourtneyheintz.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/8-ways-to-support-author-buddies-on-a-budget/

What are your feelings on reviews?

Have you received good and well as bad reviews?

How did you cope?

Extolling Your Novel…

October 17, 2013

Extol – definition: to praise highly; laud; eulogize

432018_4931392397907_1894284701_n

As writers we have to wear many hats. Author, editor, researcher, social media promoter, public speaker and many more. To plunge into the marketeer role can be daunting, we have to leave our comfort zone and reach out to the public at large. Extolling our novels to others seems uncouth from the safety of our solitary endeavors. We have nurtured and cherished our characters throughout their story. What if others do not love them as we do?

We test the waters, so to speak, with friends, family and beta readers. Favorable reviews boost our confidence in the work. Then comes the promotional plan. Where do we promote? How do we extol our work without spamming social media? Where are the best places to promote for our genre?

I am sharing some useful links, as each author’s preferences are different as well as comfort level in promoting.

Take from these the information relevant to you and your genre. I hope they help demystify the process a little.

Interview with G.M. Baker…

January 22, 2013
mandyevebarnett

Today’s word is an obvious description of G.M. Baker – Meticulous – Definition: extremely or overly careful in small details. He constructed his interview really well and keeps his work in the forefront. Well done Mitch!

G.M. Baker

a) Of the characters you have created or envisioned, which is your favorite & why?
There are characters that are obvious to me, and who I appreciate from the get go. Other characters grow on me and often surprise me in the course of writing. An example of a character I really enjoy working with is “Marcy Whitehawk” from “Kerby ‘Webb’ Webster & Kinny the Rodeo Hound” (XoXo Publishing 2012 Young Adult Novel). Marcy’s voice, her reference point in life is her constant reference to her legacy, her relatives who have passed on, the Ancients. To hear her say “Oh my dear Ancients” always brings a smile.
An example of a character that has grown on me, and surprised me in the writing of the second novel in series is Julie Emerine from “Lethal Believers Paedo” (Master Koda Select Publishing, Forthcoming Spring 2013 Paranormal Psych Mystery). This character has evolved from a manipulated victim, to sufferer for a cause, to a leader. The richness and depth of this character continues to evolve to the point where the arc appears limitless in a very positive way. There is a pride, evolving in me from the resilient nature of this character and I so enjoy the influence it has on me and the writing of other characters I am writing as well.
b) Do you favor one type of genre or do you dabble in more than one?
I am fortunate to be publishing in four genres and continue to write in all of them. The question for me is not about ‘one-type’, but working between diverse genres keeps my writing fresh and interesting. My most basic criteria when writing is to create something original and interesting. As long as I can create original and interesting characters and stories in the genre I am involved in, then there is and will remain favor among them all.
c) What do you enjoy most about writing?
When characters come to life, plot lines come together and themes deliver promise to a trusting reader.
d) Have you got a favorite place to write?
I like writing at times in private and at times in public. What remains constant, is that when I am writing, it’s a discipline that does not seem like work. Hence, it’s not a matter of ‘favorite’ place, as much as preferred places conducive to the discipline.
e) Do you plan your stories, or are you a seat of the pants style writer?
Both styles come into play. I also write in different formats that effect style. For example, I will write a 25,000 screenplay and then adapt it to a 60,000 novel. The growth of a novel for me comes in many ways and I believe to have the variety is important. Strict formula is not for me.
f) What inspires your stories?
Man it is everywhere! Can you feel it? God I love the smell of inspiration in the morning.
g) What are you currently reading?
A book about a very famous gypsy tribe, a book on synesthesia and a book about the most notorious assassin produced in the modern Mexican Drug gangs and cartels.
h) Do you have any odd habits or childhood stories?
Nope. Do you? 😉
i) Do you have any pets?
I lost many pets this last year. This is the first time in a very long time I have been without a canine companion.
j) Do you belong to a writing group? If so which one?
Stony Plain Writer’s Group
k) What age did you start writing stories/poems?
About grade, six (age 11-12) I started enjoying the creative process. First multi-media art and then the writing began later on in high school as my commitment to sport activities lessened.
l) Do you have a book published? If so what is it called & where can readers purchase it?
