Melting we were but it was worth it…

Deliquesce – definition: 1) to melt away or to disappear as if by melting 2) (chemistry) to dissolve gradually and become liquid by attracting and absorbing moisture from the air, as certain salts, acids, and alkalies.

Strathconaph-FAC-artintheplaza-2013Not sure about chemistry but my fellow Writers Foundation members, Dream Write Publishing staff and I were melting yesterday at the Arts in the Plaza and Strathcona Celebrates. It was a pageantry filled day (my English is showing!) Tanks and military vehicles paraded through the streets and then the horse guards, which were my favorite. Bright red uniforms and gold helmets with tassels flowing.

Luckily we had canopies to shade us and displays of the Writers Foundation history were very popular. I managed to hand out quite a few Rumble coloring competition pages so hopefully there will be lots of entries to judge.

Inconsequential ..? I Don’t Think So…

Inconsequential – definition: of little or no importance : insignificant

insignificant

In the grand scheme of things we are insignificant to the majority of the population of the world. However, if we believe this within a more local perspective, it can block the opportunities awaiting us. Being open to prospects in whatever form they present themselves, can, and doe,s widen our ‘range’.

Take for example an email sent to my writers group late last year. The local council asked if a creative writer could assist them in structuring a new vision statement.  I was the only one to offer her services, surprisingly. To cut a long story short, I worked with a consultant and a new vision was produced. My reward, apart from the fee, was to attend the unveiling at a very posh luncheon and to receive a personal thank you letter from the Mayor. If I had not offered my services none of this would have happened. Sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and go for it.

Since then I have written several articles on behalf of non-profit organisations and am always on the look out for the next request. I even made a desk plaque which says New Opportunities.

So why not take some advice from the quote below and understand each person has a significant affect on those around them. It may be a small part of the world we effect but that is all right. After all we can not be everything to everyone.

I’m Important..?

Wistful – definition: a feeling of or showing a timid desire or longing

Firstly apologies for the late post, I was struggling with this one.

I am a true Gemini. How do I know this? I can be quiet and reserved when I feel the people around me are ‘better’ or I’m just feeling  plain old out of my depth for whatever reason. Conversely I can also be hands on, confident and vocal. Yesterday I was the quiet one until I found a kindred artistic soul among the throng of councilors and dignitaries.

Where was I? At the 2013 State of the County Address in Strathcona County as an invited guest. Fancy I know. The reason? I assisted with creating the Council’s new Vision Statement, which was revealed in all its glory yesterday. I had to keep it a secret for months! This is a real bonus to my freelance portfolio.

The kindred soul? Was actually the Director of Crime Stoppers and after we discussed my obsession with writing I was able to give her some encouragement and ideas for pursuing her painting in a more ‘hands on’ manner.  I suggested she got involved with an association or group and have relief from a job that has some terrifying and brutal events to handle.

We all wish we could do what we love the most all the time – a longing that some make happen. It is my plan to write full time so I will research options and read about those people who made the hard choices to pursue their dreams. I certainly do not think it will be easy but the satisfaction of making my dream come true will be worth it.

At the County Address we were treated to a wonderful lunch and Mayor Linda Osinchuk spoke for quite some time on the uniqueness of Strathcona County. The future holds a lot of promise for the third largest municipality in Canada. To be honest I feel very lucky to live here and am quietly confident I will ‘grow’ along with the new and exciting changes that are planned. Every aspect of life is catered for in Strathcona from work to retail to recreational and many more.

I will share the Vision once it is officially placed on the Council website. Watch this space!
