Escaping to Write – A Mini Retreat…

November 7, 2014

Overlander

This post was created and scheduled ahead of time as I will actually be traveling to Jasper in the Rocky Mountains when it goes live. My friend, Linda and I are going to spend the weekend writing our NaNoWriMo novels surrounded by the magnificence of mountains and spectacular views. Our accommodation is a log walled lodge with a roaring fireplace, perfect for sitting beside with laptop and a glass of wine. As you can see from the photo it is a stunning setting.

We will explore the surrounding area on short walks to refresh mind and body and may do some sightseeing as well – it depends on how the muse is performing. Escaping to indulge in my writing is always a treat and one I rarely (if ever) pass by.

Quotes:

You are not a writer of you do not write. Find the time – even if it’s 500 words, a short story or a paragraph. Novel’s don’t write themselves. Erin Niumata.

It Pays to be Vigilant when Editing…

Vigilant – definition: watchful to detect danger; awake and alert

editing

Have you noticed that your mind fills in ‘missing’ words or ‘skips’ extra words when you are editing? What is this phenomenon called? Alas, even though I searched quite extensively, I could not find anything that specifically named this ‘brain trick’. It is certainly not dyslexia or aphasia. Maybe it is our brains expectation of what the sentence is saying due to years of reading? An automatic and subconscious ‘correction’ so to speak.

This is a phenomenon I have come to notice since beginning my writing journey. I have become much more conscious of editing errors in my work, when reading novels and editing other peoples work. There is no guarantee we will find every single error even when we strive to. With the help of multiple beta readers and fellow writers reading through our manuscripts, there is the hope these errors will be minimal.

What tricks do you use to find errors?

These two authors have generously shared their experience – take a look at their editing advice.

This weekend I will be immersed in editing my current WIP – Ockleberries to the Rescue as  was as plotting my NaNoWriMo romance novel. Three writing friends and I will be enjoying the long weekend in Canmore – a mini writing retreat. It will be my first visit to the town so i’m looking forward to a bit of sightseeing to refresh the muse and inspire.

Getting into the Spirit…

Vim – definition: force : energy : spirit

If you knew me well, you would know I immediately went to the word – spirit! A glass  of wine is the perfect relaxer at the end of the day and fuel for the muse too.

Wine

Just for fun take the quiz and find out which one you are.

For some reason I’m Mischief Maker – who would have thought?

What is your favorite tipple?

Over the years I have gone from white wine to red and now mostly drink blush. Our tastes change over time – not quite sure why. As a young teen I loved candy/sweets but now can’t quite make myself eat them. My only weakness is good white chocolate – the Swiss kind and Milky Bars!

Nestle – Milky Bar – I can remember the first Milky Bar Kid (yes showing my age!) So in short it comes down to wine and chocolate – what more do we need?

Ambrosia of the Gods…

July 11, 2013

Ambrosial – definition: exceptionally pleasing to taste or smell

Gods

I was taken back to my school days with this word. I studied ancient Greek mythology as well as Roman mythology in my last couple of years of school.

Ambrosia was depicted as food or drink of the Greek gods (or demigods) and had the effect of making them immortal. In the words of Homeric tradition, the ambrosia was taken to Olympus by doves. However, ancient art depicts a nymph, called Ambrosia, delivering the delight.

The myth of King Lycurgus tells us he attacked Ambrosia because she served  Dionysis. This resulted in her being turned into a grapevine. In turn Dionysis brought about Lycurgus’ demise in a rather disgusting way.

Why someone would attack the God who brought such merriment is beyond me! Dionysis was surely the party animal of Olympus. God of wine, winemaking, the grape harvest, ritual madness and ecstasy!

I certainly praise him…nothing like a glass or two – especially as I am enjoying a wonderful vacation.
