ImageWe can be overwhelmed with our own and other people’s expectations when creating a writing project. Questions race through our minds, taunting us – Am I good enough? Have I really got the skill? or Will anyone think my work worthy? Don’t feel these insecurities are the soul territory of the novice writer as many well known authors still suffer angst of one sort or another, even if it is only – Will this story be as enthralling as the last? Self imposed expectations can stall or even stop your creative flow, a scary place to be for all creative minds and in particular writers, who sit before a blank page with a whirling dervish of emotion crowding out any creativity.  In some cases this insecurity will be compounded by friends and family, who may demean your passion as a passing fancy or treat it with distaste or derision.

It is true writing is a solitary endeavour but there are ways to make connections. Of course there is the internet route, where everything from writing tips to author blogs to social media is at your fingertips, but do these give you a real connection? What we all yearn for is actually a more personal conncetion to someone (or even a group) who can encourage and  support us in the real world as opposed to the cyber one. Isn’t it nicer to sit down with like minded people and share our work? Constructive critque over a coffee or within a writers group meeting is not only of practical help but gives us a  feeling of community. An added bonus and one that truly boosts our confidence is when another writer will ask for help, an opinion, a viewpoint or even request mentorship. All of us can give as well as receive thus making our writerly life not so solitary.

Reach out to others – find a local group or even start your own! The benefits are countless and to be frank make our passion so much more enjoyable. Some of the following places may help:

Your local library. Search MeetUp or your local yellow pages. Your area’s Writers Guild or Association. www.wfscsherwoodpark.com

As I had time to enjoy on my birthday, I decided to walk with my dog in the warmth of a Sunday morning sun. A gentle breeze refreshed as I brushed the grass heads gently with my hands, some were heavy cylindrical shapes while others had delicate soft fronds. There was an earthy aroma eminating from the dew sodden earth but the road surface was already hot under the sun’s rays. It occured to me then that I have not walked outside bare foot in a very long time. So I took off my shoes and relished the feeling of the hard warm surface under on soles and the connection through my feet to the ground.

Why not do something today to reconnect to childhood memories and activities, Mother Nature or delight in a new sensation? It may inspire a character’s experience or enable you to reflect and return to your writing refreshed.

in-300-varscona-theatre

My dear friend, Linda treated me to a wonderfully funny evening at the Varscona Theatre last night (a birthday treat). The performers of The School of Night group were quick witted and sharp as tacks when given direction from the audience and the Word Serpent. With a very loose Shakespeare theme, olde English was mixed with Canadian history to delight us with a performance of artful improvision.

If you are in need of light hearted joy or a good belly laugh I suggest you find a group near you.

Celebration…

My friend and mentor, Linda J Pedley and I celebrating her Pride of Strathcona Award evening.

It was my great honor to have nominated (in secret) Linda for her constant encouragement and continued enthusiasm for the written word. She was humble but delighted and the award is richly deserved.

Book Review - A review to contemplate.

I have had very mixed feelings about this review. Initially I was obviously disappointed that someone else didn’t love my little monster as much as I, but then I got to thinking. It is totally unrealistic to think that everyone will be as adoring of Rumble. I suspect there is an expectation that every single child’s book should ‘fit’ the usual perceived format. This, I feel, drastically restricts not only the author, but the young reader, whose imagination has not yet become a distant memory and all writers/authors play in their imagination all the time anyway. How else would we have entire worlds populated with imaginary friends? I purposely chose a black and white world for Rumble to highlight how he perceived the ‘upper’ world with its brightness and colour.
So after pondering this review for some weeks I have decided not to take it to heart but see it as a single person’s perception and no more.
I will view it as part of my ‘growing’ process along my writing journey…do I need to garner a thick skin?
How do you response to negative reviews?
