With June being audio book appreciation month, I thought we could look at the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

As with all technology there are pros and cons to their use. Some readers prefer a hard cover, or paperback over devices, (I have to put my hand up to this), however there are benefits to having a book 'read' to you.

advantages

While listening you can accomplish chores, cook, exercise, walk the dog, or elevate the struggle during your commute. If you suffer eye strain, or are visually impaired audio books allow you to enjoy a good book. When on vacation you can take more 'books' with you on a device, rather than having an over weight suitcase! Another benefit is hearing the narrator's expression and tone making the characters come to life. Sometimes it is the author that reads and this gives you a glimpse into how they voice their work. Listening can also immerse you into the mood and atmosphere of a story.

disadvantageS

On the opposite side the cons to audiobooks include difficulties associated in listening. You may get distracted by things happening around you, your own thoughts, or you hear but do not absorb the story. With audio you do not have the ability to skip back a page to check on what happened before, or something you want to know about a character. This lack of a visual aid can make listening less relaxing as you concentrate on the supplied information, particularly if the text is non-fiction.

Another con is if the narrator's style does not fit the genre or tone of the story. This is, of course, distracting and reduces our pleasure in the book. Also if a narrtor's voice lulls you into sleep its probably best to use it only at bedtime, rather than on your commute, or when your concentration is important.

Of course, the most common complaint to audio books is the lack of a tactile experience. The weight and feel of a book, the unique aroma and the sounds of turning pages is hard to beat afterall.

We are lucky to have the choice of physical, or audio books, so whichever you prefer just enjoy the stories.

Which do you prefer and why?
