While most of us have experienced the dreaded layovers at airports, there are some ways to make the time more pleasant, especially as writers.

We can utilize the time to write a new chapter or scene for our current project, or plot out a whole new story idea. I did this on my last layover, which was three hours. It culminated in a first chapter of a fantasy novel.

Airports are also marvelous locations for people watching! This is the life blood for characterizations of possible characters. Seeing and hearing interactions between people can be a wonderful source of dialogue too. There are also mannerisims, accents, and physical attributes to note down fr future use.

It is also a time to make use of the free Wi-Fi and charge our devices. There is nothing more depressing than a ‘dead’ device.

We can, of course, read and escape into a virtual world. Or even journal what we are experiencing.

Exercise is important as we might be sitting in the airplane for long stretches of time, so take a stroll.

It is easy to snack on salty/sweet/junk foods as we wait, but pick healthier options to prevent dehydration and bloating. Drink plenty of water too, it helps prevent jetlag.

If you want to enjoy some extra peace there is always the option of the airline lounge, although there is usually a cost, unless you have a membership to that particular airline.

OTHER Essential ARE:

  • A book (or two)
  • Portable charger
  • Neck pillow
  • Compression socks
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Lightweight snacks (granola bars, nuts)
  • Personal hygiene kit (toothbrush, wet wipes, deodorant)
  • Water bottle
  • Eye mask

What are your essentials for air travel?

Have you begun a story while waiting at an airport?
