You may have seen I have been a guest on several podcasts this month. It has been an exciting and interesting experience. When preparing for these interviews I ensured I was ready. Here are a few tips that can make all the difference.

Preparation

• Double check your call time. This is extremely important as your host may be in a different time zone. So clarify what time the podcast will start in your time zone. I make sure I have noted this on an alert on my cell phone allowing plenty of time for set up and pre-interview chat.
• Your media kit. Send all your details and images to the interviewer ahead of time and ensure that if they have a script you read through it carefully. Sometimes it is just a chat, which is just as fun.
• Engage with previous interviews. This will give you an idea of how the interviewer structures their podcast questions and their style.
• Prepare your talking points and stories. This is just a list of topics you want to cover - i.e. book, genre, upcoming events, your writing life etc. Have physical copies of your books to hand and the blurb.

• Set up the technology. Podcasters have a multitude of platforms, so make sure you know how to connect to each one prior to your interview. It is best to ensure it is compatible with your technology prior to the interview. Sometimes you are required to download a specific platform.
• Make use of a microphone.  Using headphones, or a free standing microphone will ensure your voice is clear and loud so you are heard clearly.
• Make your space quiet. Make sure you are sitting in a quiet room (close the windows to dampen road noise etc.) and your cell phone is shut off.
• Be natural. Have a drink of water, relax those shoulders and be yourself while you relay details of your book and your unique perspective.
• Engage with viewers. When a question comes in make sure you answer as throughly as you can from your perspective.

After the show

• Thank the host. For the opportunity they gave you and express your delight in having such a great interview.
• Promote the episode. It goes without saying promote the interview on your social media and tag them too.
