WORDSMITH’S COLLECTIVE THURSDAY – BOOKSTORE RELATIONSHIPS

As many of you know having your books in a bricks and mortar store is a thrill. There is something special about a 'real' life interaction with booklovers that surpasses the 'virtual' platforms.

I am extremely lucky to work with several independent bookstores and stores including: Sherwood Park Bookworm in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
Pandora’s Boox Bookstore, Olds, Alberta. Book Nook – Lavender & Lace Boutique – Sherwood Park, Alberta. dare Books & Brew, Mundare, Alberta, Local 95 – Edmonton, Alberta and possibly another one this week - fingers crossed.

It is essential that as an author you maintain a relationship with the bookstore owner after you have dropped off your books. This is a working relationship like any other and it takes effort.

Firstly, let the owner know which genre your book is so they know where to display it. Also let your readers know where your books are and regularly mention the store in your social media posts.

Secondly, while visting the store to restock, make sure you discuss any mutually beneficial events that may be of interest. For example, I run a Halloween colouring contest every few years for my children's picture book, Rumble's First Scare. And have also organized personal and themed readings. This is part of keeping your relationship healthy, respectful and beneficial to both parties.

Do not expect the bookstore owner and their staff to 'sell' your book, it is up to you to direct readers to the store. Mention them regularly, like their posts, share upcoming events etc. Remember as independent stores they need your support as much as you need theirs.

Depending on the store you can sign the copies they stock, update them on any awards the specfic book has received and if stickers are available make sure to place them on the bookstore stock as a feature.

Do you have any tips you can share?
