What Now…?

LifeinSlakePatch 001

It was difficult to ‘let go’ of Slake Patch and its inhabitants. They had been such a big part of my life, but now they are in the hands of several publishers and I must move on.

So looking forward, I have several projects I can get my teeth into. My writers circle AGM, as secretary I have a few responsibilities to attend to. An exciting book launch for the Writers Foundation, which will be our first – of many I hope.

And… NaNoWriMo. Yes, I am embarking on another NaNo – it is such an adventure seeing how a story unfolds under the pressure of a deadline. Knowing I have, not only to finish on time, but have to reach that fifty thousand word point, within a mere thirty days. I have a notion for a story, which is vastly different from Slake. In essence it is a love story with a twist – reincarnation. And that’s as much as you’re getting!

I know how easy it is to push aside a project and let ‘life’ take up our time. Months, or even years, can pass and that story idea, notes or partially finished manuscript can gather dust. A story should be told – I believe it is a writer’s responsibility to release their words into the world for all to share. Your story is a gift – so bestow it. “I’m responsible?” I hear you cry – well, how is anyone going to read your story if it stays on the shelf? Don’t play the ‘what if’ game – send your words into the world and take heart from the fact every single author (yes even the famous ones) have had rejections. It is the path we must tread bravely. Our reward is knowing our story will be enjoyed by people far and wide.

So my suggestion to you is – try NaNoWriMo. It doesn’t really matter if you don’t reach the magical fifty thousand words but the process of writing to a deadline is enlightening. I was surprised at how focused I became and how, actually writing every day, brought its own recompense. I’m not saying it isn’t a daunting prospect – it is! But I think you will amaze yourself and learn something new about your writing in the process.

Good luck.

  1. We have created a NaNo wild woman, soliciting far and wide for crazed… I mean, willing, participants

And I remember when you looked at me with wild eyes, and an expression that said, “you’ve got to be joking.”

Prepare the to-do-lists and complete what you can NOW, for we are looking forward to another “novel” idea!
