On 9th January we celebrated National Word Nerd Day and Poetry at Work Day, both are cause for a high five within the writing community.

Let's start with Word Nerd Day. As writers words are our super power and learning new ones to enable us to express our selves in our narratives is paramount. If we can use one word instead of three or more, it is always good for the flow of a story. So, we celebrate vocabulary and words, as well as enthusing about our favorite words and the National Word Nerd Day in our culture. In 2013, you will see I used a Word of the Day desk calendar to post every day using the daily word. Yes, it was a lot of work, but I increased my word power!

Then we have Poetry at Work Day, it is supposed to be the day workers enjoy poetry as a means of relaxation and recreation while at work. I, for one, have never experienced this while working - have you? We know poems are a creative way to boost mental ability and, it is said they improve, build empathy and aid in building strong work relationships, while maintaining a psychological balance. The result is a better output at work and stress relief work. The day is celebrated in offices by posting a poem on a large board for everyone to read, organizing poetry slams, and encouraging workers to discuss or write a poem. In essence, using poetry relays messages and emotions can be conveyed in words, using structure, style, and rhyme.
