- What was the inspiration for A Fifth of the Story?
The inspiration for my novel “A Fifth of the Story” stemmed from a desire to craft a thrilling narrative that delves into themes of loyalty, espionage, and the looming threats to American democracy posed by the proliferation of divisiveness and racism. I wanted to create a story that not only entertains but also sparks meaningful reflections on these pressing societal issues.
- Is Brock O’Reilly based on a real person, or a hybrid of many?
Brock O'Reilly is a character that I consider to be a hybrid of many people, but I can't deny that his personality and experiences are significantly inspired by my husband, who served as an officer in the Army’s intelligence agency. While Brock isn’t based on a single individual, certain aspects of his character do draw from real-life experiences and traits, particularly my husband’s.
- What differences did you find in the style of writing from your previous book?
The style of writing for “A Fifth of the Story” differs significantly from my previous books, which were nonfiction. Crafting a thriller required me to shift gears and embrace a more imaginative and suspenseful narrative style. This transition allowed me to explore a whole new dimension of storytelling, and I enjoyed the creative process immensely.

- Did you plan on writing a sequel, or did the character demand it?
Yes, I’ve already written a prequel, and I’m currently working on a sequel to A Fifth of the Story. Undoubtedly, my characters demanded their stories be continued.
- When did you start writing?
I have been captivated by storytelling since I first picked up a pen in early childhood. Alongside my work on “A Fifth of the Story,” I have also enjoyed writing short stories, poetry, and plays, exploring the diverse avenues of creative expression.
- Are you open to writing other genres?
That sounds like an exciting direction to explore! Dabbling in sci-fi and dystopian genres could offer a captivating opportunity for both me and my readers. Establishing myself as a credible thriller author first could definitely pave a strong path for any future ventures into other genres. I'm sure my storytelling skills will shine through in any genre I choose to pursue.
- How does your writing impact your life, or vice versa?
Writing has a profound impact on my life as it serves as a means of self-expression and introspection. It allows me to explore my thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a meaningful way. In turn, life experiences, observations, and interactions influence my writing by providing inspiration for compelling narratives and complex characters. Both aspects are intertwined, creating a dynamic relationship between my personal life and my creative endeavors.
- With a multitude of memberships, editorial and freelance projects to your name, how do you juggle them all?
Despite having several memberships and editorial and freelance projects to my name, I manage to juggle them by meticulously planning my day, month, and year using planners. I believe in staying organized and prioritizing tasks to ensure that I can give my best to each project. Admittedly, I also have a habit of staying up too late and waking up too early, which allows me to maximize my productivity and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Do you have a message of encouragement for other writers?
As a writer, I believe that whatever we write and speak should be laced with morality and light because we live in a world where people desperately need hope. My message of encouragement to other writers is to continue to develop your craft, embrace mentorships, and always give more than you take. It’s important to stay true to your values and use your voice to spread positivity and inspiration through your writing. Keep honing your skills and never underestimate the profound impact your words can have on the world.
