It might seem early to some to begin planning for events in 2025, but with a multitude of opportunities available the more we plan ahead the easier it will be. I have received two confirmations for presenter and panelist position's already, so have marked my calendar, set reminders, and begun planning for them. Both of these opportunities involve my role as a presenter and a panelist, so I thought I would look at the differences of these two positions.
Presenter:

A sole speaker is a person who is responsible for relaying their knowledge and expertise on a certain topic to an audience. This can be to a small group, or large audience, and in person, or online. Presentations vary in length, but are usually between 55–90 minutes long.
Panelist:

As a panelist you are part of a group of experts discussing a certain topic and answering questions from the audience and the moderator.
To prepare for a presentation find out what type of event it is, what the amenities are like and what equipment is accessible to you. Will you be speaking to other experts, a specific or general audience, and what your time limit will be. This enables you to be more prepared and comfortable. Be sure to engage eye contact with your audience and project your voice (even with a microphone) and before commencing your presentation specify if you are happy to answer questions during, or after your presentation. Have handouts and business cards available and be open to audience members approaching you after your presentation.
When you are a panelist be as prepared as you would be for a presentation to ensure you have engaging and entertaining information, including stories and anecdotes for the audience. Look up your fellow panelists so you know their sphere of expertise and experience, this builds rapport. Be aware of the moderator as they guide the discussion, ask questions, and keep the panel on track. Be mindful to keep your speaking short and sweet, keep your answers precise and to the point of the question. You don’t want to appear to steal the spotlight.
How is your 2025 shaping up for events?
