The fight against AI theft of copyrighted materials is currently massive. And although, it will take time to resolve the theft of millions of copyrighted materials from the mega AI corporations, there is some good news. Anthropic, a supposedly safety and research company, has settled an AI copyright lawsuit with book authors. We must trust that this settlement will lead the way to more AI companies theft being brought to justice in similar court battles.

Justin Nelson, the lawyer representing the book authors against Anthropic, said "it is a historic settlement [that] will benefit all class members."

The terms of the proposed class settlement are to be finalized next week, according to a federal appeals court ruling filed on Tuesday. Anthropic, of course, declined to comment on the deal. You can read the details here: Link

Approximately a dozen lawsuits are current in California and New York courts against various AI companies for copyright infringement based on the companies’ unauthorized copying of authors’ works to train their generative AI models. All of the cases brought by individual authors, so far, are class action lawsuits, meaning that they do not just cover the plaintiffs named in each lawsuit, but all people who fall within the “class,” as defined in the lawsuit. There are also a few consolidated cases. This is good news for all authors.

What you can do

To aid in the refusal of any of your work being stolen add to all your e-books copyright page the phrase: 'no AI training clause'.

This simple action may help establish blatant violations in the future. Ask your publisher to do so for all new books and when there is a new printing, or edition of a previously published book.

Stay vigilant and periodically search to list any infringements of your copyrighted works.

Stand strong - creativity and critical thinking are worth fighting for.
