BIBLIOPHILE’S COLLECTIVE TUESDAY – DIVERSITY IN READING AND LIFE

As readers (and writers for that matter), reading stories from diverse genres allows us to glimpse into other people's lives. There are a multitude of cultures, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, and experiences throughout the world. So to be given the ability to experience these lives is such a gift.

The benefits are many, but include increased empathy, cultural enrichment and breaking down, whilst understanding stereotypes. It can also be a representation of your own experience allowing unity and inclusivity for all.

This concept was brought into sharp focus for me as I visited Georges Brossard's Insectarium in Montreal today. Nature is the ultimate in diversity as shown in this one show case. These are beetles - just look at the range in colour and size. Nature is so rich if we just stop and look. The collection holds 250,000 specimens that Georges collected himself, a life's work bringing insects from around the globe into view and understanding.

Reading from other perspectives enriches our lives, but also gives us a deeper understanding of the scope of human life in the world. We may be the same species but we are as diverse as these precious bugs. So let's embrace the differences.

Do you make a conscious effort to read diverse voices in books?
