I mentioned recently that I engaged a publicist to assist me in promoting my books. I understand this is not an option for everyone as there are many factors to consider, including financial. However, there are benefits, one major one being time. While you continue to write - the mainstay of your writing life - a publicist works with multiple resources to publicize your book(s). So lets take a look at the ins and outs.
What is a book publicist?
They are a professional specializing in promoting and generating PR for your books. With a indepth understanding of the publishing industry and the media landscape, they can utilize a variety of book marketing strategies. This in turn, ensures you gain visibility, increase your author brand and connect with your target audience.
WHAT ARE THE Pros and cons?
Although, authors may have an extensive social media following, as well as connections to the writing and reading communities, a publicist has access to an extensive network of media contacts, including journalists, bloggers, influencers, and book reviewers. They know where and to whom to pitch your book in order to gain media visibility, clarify your story, identify strong angles, and connect with relevant journalists and podcast hosts etc. In addition they are able to craft effective press releases, coordinate book tours, arrange author interviews, and secure book reviews.
Of course, there is a financial investment required so look at your budget and decide if the potential of working with the publicist balances a return. Coupled with this make sure you have a publicist who understands your specific needs, whether with genre, or marketing expectations.
Remember there is no guarantee of success in either financial return or even global celebrity status. (Tongue in cheek with this). So if that is your only goal, maybe rethink your expectations. No matter what opportunities your publicist extends to you without a compelling story media outlets may not be interested.
It is a partnership and you must approach it as such. Make sure you are available and prepared for the opportunities your publicist secures for you, after all that is why you hired them in the first place.
