What inspired you to write another Boomer book?
The first Boomer book was received so well that I felt Boomer had more adventures to share. I also wanted the story to do more than entertain; I wanted it to be useful in the classroom, too. Children are encouraged to remember what Boomer sees along the path and then recall those details in reverse order to help him make his way home, which supports comprehension and memory. I’ve written five stories so far, and I’m excited for children to eventually enjoy them all.
How did you come up with the Boomer character?
One early morning, I was walking along a trail near our home when I saw a rabbit. I stopped and watched him as he hopped down the path. After that, I started waking up around the same time each morning to see if I could find him again, and I did. I watched him eating and observing his surroundings, and that’s when I knew I wanted to write a bunny book.
Is educating children about their world important?
Absolutely. When I was teaching elementary school, I encouraged children to discover, explore, ask questions, and think about ways to solve problems. I believe that kind of curiosity helps prepare them for the future.
How can we shape future generations to care for the planet?
I think gardening is one beautiful way to begin. When children grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, they naturally learn so much. They learn about soil, watering, weeds, and what helps plants thrive. They also begin to understand the important role of the bugs that live in the soil and support the environment. Gardening inspires curiosity, and curiosity naturally leads to meaningful conversations, including why it’s important to avoid pesticides that can harm the environment.
When writing for children, what expectations are required?
I think every author would answer this differently depending on the type of story they want to tell. For me, I begin by thinking about the age of my audience, what children enjoy, and what I want them to take away from the story. Once I have that foundation, I can begin shaping the characters and writing the story itself.
Which authors have influenced you?
Marshall Saunders, who wrote Beautiful Joe in 1893, is one author who influenced me. It’s a story about a dog named Joe, told from his perspective. I’ve always enjoyed imagining what our pets might be thinking when we take them on walks or include them in our daily lives.
I also admire Carolyn Keene, who wrote the Nancy Drew books. My mom introduced me to those mysteries, and I always loved the idea of a teenage girl solving problems and uncovering clues. Those books inspired me when I was young and made me want to figure things out for myself.
If you could have supper with a famous author or two, who would they be?
I would love to meet Mike Berenstain, who continues the Berenstain Bears series that his parents began. My children grew up with those books, and I’ve always appreciated the lessons they taught through storytelling.
Are you working on another project? If so, can you share?
Yes, I’m working on several projects, but the one I’m focusing on right now is a collection of short stories about family pets.
