CREATIVE EDGE AUTHOR INTERVIEW – JAMES L. HILL

Did you have a clear idea of the plot for The Ruby Cradle?

I did. As the second book in the Gemstone series, it had to pick up with the same characters as in the first. But there had to be a definite twist, we were going back in time to learn more about the dragons. And why Rehema was so mad about their release.

What are the links to the first book in the series, The Emerald Lady?

Of course, the characters, Jeremy, Shera, Rehema, and Aberash. The biggest links are Zabella, who was just born in The Emerald Lady. And Ehecatl, the dragon, who aids the mermaids in exchange for the whereabouts of his captured brothers.

Are you planning/writing the next book in the series? Can you give us some details?

There will be one more book. It will resume the story back in their present time. It will be an end to the millennium of wars between man, mermaid, and dragon. Who will survive. Who will not.

How important are fantasy novels in modern day culture?

Fantasies can bring to light many ills people try to ignore in their daily lives. It can make complicated ideas and policies easier to understand by changing the participants to creatures other than us.

What is your starting point when you begin writing? Plot, characters, scenes, or something else?

That depends on the story. Some stories are better setting the tone or mood and that means using a scene or plotline. Then some stories are better when you put the reader right in the middle of the action by starting with the main character’s point of view.

Where do your inspirations come from?

Everywhere. News stories, conversations, dreams that just won’t go away. Inspiration is a Muse that is ethereal. She will come when you least expect her. And in your hour of sheer desperation.

Do you have a writing schedule?

Not really. I do most of my writing at night because that is when I have the most time. But it’s not like I write every day, I write when I have something to work on.

When not writing what hobbies do you enjoy?

I guess fishing would be the most often hobby I do. I also enjoy shooting and archery. And I wish I could get back out on my boat more often. I like to get the sails up.

How long have you been writing?

All my life. From the time I was 7 or 8. Again not every day.

Other Books in the series:
